After 22 years on the highlights of Berlin's night, Watergate is set to close its doors, marking the end of an era of one of the most iconic clubs.

We’re bowing out, and we’re doing it with style, because as they say:

The party is over – long live the party!

Nestled by the canal between Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg in one of the sweetest spots of the city, the club's decision comes as it faces a mix of challenges. Inflation, energy crisis, soaring rent and the ongoing effects of the pandemic are current issues of Berlin’s nightlife nowadays.

On the bright side, the UNESCO designation as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity has brought well-deserved recognition and financial support to Berlin's vibrant club culture, highlighting its essential role in the global music landscape. However, institutions like Watergate are feeling the financial strain, reminding us that sustainable solutions are more crucial than ever. This moment is a call to action for clubs to get creative and adapt to a shifting environment where every night out is a celebration of survival.

In response to these challenges, the Club Commission is also on the front line,  advocating for Berlin’s nightlife and working to uplift clubs as they navigate these changes. Their efforts are commendable, yet many venues still grapple with rising costs and regulatory hurdles.

The Club Commission's efforts to keep the Berlin scene afloat have also been bolstered by massive protests against the extension of the A100 highway, which threatens the future of other clubs like Wilde Renate and About Blank. Seeing institutions work hand in hand with artists and ravers is a breath of fresh air for the scene and a sign of the way forward.

As Watergate prepares for its final chapter, it promises an epic send-off with an exciting lineup featuring renowned DJs like Charlotte de Witte, Richie Hawtin, Sven Väth, and Kerri Chandler. Legenday parties such as Multisex, Club Heartbroken, and the classic New Kids on Acid will bring the community together one last time, celebrating the magic that Watergate has created over the years.

Watergate’s last dance will culminate in a special New Year’s party, details coming soon, but expectations are high to say goodbye to Watergate one of the cornerstones of Berlin’s nightlife history and a symbol of the city’s creative spirit.
