When it comes to iconic clubs in Berlin, just a mention of a couple of names is enough for Watergate to pop up in the conversation. While it competes in the big leagues alongside clubs like Berghain and Tresor, this gem nestled in the heart of the city shines with a more colorful and sparkling vibe compared to the darker, raw, and industrial offerings of its counterparts. Let’s take a closer look at what has made Watergate a cornerstone of the global electronic scene.

Set against the dreamy backdrop of the Spree River, Watergate has been a beacon of nightlife since it opened its doors in 2002.

Founded by visionaries Steffan Hack, Ulrich Wombacher, Niklas Eichstädt, and Johannes Braun, Watergate emerged as an extension of the legendary WMF club—a 90s icon where DnB nights thrived.

Drawing inspiration from the city's rich musical history, the founders brought forth an eclectic sound that broke away from the heavy techno beats dominating Berlin at the time. In its early days, Watergate showcased a diverse mix of powerful basslines and fast breakbeats, even hosting occasional Hip Hop and Reggae nights. However, as time passed, Wombacher, Eichstädt, and Hack shifted their focus toward extended House and Techno sessions, catering to the evolving demands of a city like Berlin.

While the club's sound has matured over the years, Watergate offers much more than just music; it boasts one of the most enviable locations in the German capital. The club strikes a perfect balance between modernity and functionality, with a stunning glass facade and a terrace just steps from the water, ideal for those night owls who want to catch an unforgettable sunrise.

With its prime location, Watergate has attracted attention beyond the music industry, transforming into a hub for cultural expression. Art installations and photography exhibitions frequently grace the space, and the dance floor has even been transformed into a runway for fashion shows. In fact, supermodel Kate Moss unveiled her new perfume at an event in the club back in 2008, adding to its allure.

Compared to its peers, Watergate has a more intimate capacity—around 700 guests—making it feel cozy for dancers seeking a more personal vibe. The DJs are positioned at eye level, fostering those unique moments of connection between the crowd and the artist. It's also the perfect setup for those DJs who love to soak in the energy of the room and see step by step what the artists are doing in the booth.

Musically, Watergate stands out with a more varied palette compared to other giants of the Berlin scene. While House and Techno are the mainstays, the club occasionally dips into Drum & Bass. However, it's the balance of renowned resident DJs—like Anja Schneider, Mathias Kaden, and ANNA—alongside true musical legends that has solidified its reputation. Sven Väth and his Cocoon parties are a staple, while harder Techno nights with Charlotte de Witte and Richie Hawtin are highly anticipated. And let's not forget the expected nights New Kids on Acid parties, organised by Zip, featuring memorable extended sets by Ricardo Villalobos on those warm summer mornings.

Access to Watergate isn’t as exclusive as some other clubs, but there is still a selection process at the door. Don’t worry; there’s no need to don a vampire outfit, and latex can stay in the wardrobe. The organisers aim to create a comfortable and safe environment, welcoming everyone regardless of their background, but they do keep an eye on the crowd. In other words, the door policy remains somewhat arbitrary, so bringing your best attitude will definitely boost your chances of getting in. Patience is also key when facing those Berlin queues, which can stretch for hours—Watergate is no exception!

Having established itself as a solid venue in terms of sound and infrastructure, the founders are not resting on their laurels. During the summer, it's common to see Watergate hosting outdoor parties at Sage Beach Berlin, which have become an institution in their own right, featuring international artists like Extrawelt, Oliver Huntemann, and Henrik Schwarz.

Watergate has also made waves internationally, hosting successful events in paradise locations like the beaches of Mexico and Greece, parties at Pacha Barcelona, and showcases during Amsterdam's annual ADE. This positioning solidifies Watergate's reputation on the global stage.

In addition to its role as a pillar of the Berlin and international scene, the club boasts its own label, Watergate Records, which serves as a platform for both established and emerging artists. Its first release, by Onur Özer, kicked off the mix series Watergate and was released on CD in July 2008, continuing the club's dedication to being at the forefront of the electronic scene.

Legends like DJ Sneak, M.A.N.D.Y, and Subb-An have been featured on this Various Artists compilations. Additionally, multiple vinyl releases are available in the club’s online store for DJs who still love to spin records, just like the good old days.

Sadly, the impeccable story of Watergate has a looming expiration date. Despite overcoming numerous obstacles over the years, the aftershocks of the pandemic are still reverberating in the Berlin scene. Coupled with the unjustified rent hikes that the founders are facing, they’ve had to make the tough decision to close their doors by the end of this year, leaving behind more than two decades of unforgettable nights dancing along the Spree.
